Safe Space Policy

1. Introduction

 

This policy covers any City Fiestas space, or City Fiestas event.

 

City Fiestas is committed to providing an inclusive and supportive space for all students. This policy is applicable to all our staff members and student guests alike. City Fiestas believes all our guests should be free from intimidation or harassment, resulting from prejudice or discrimination on the grounds of age, disability, marital or maternity/paternity status, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, gender identity, trans status, socio-economic status, or ideology or culture, or any other form of distinction.

 

Any events organized by City Fiestas must be in line with this zero-tolerance policy but also in line with the respective policies of the client/University to ensure the safety of all guests and staff.

 

2. Accountability and ensuring Safe Space Policy is followed

 

City Fiestas recognizes discrimination can occur wherever it is not consciously challenged. Therefore, City Fiestas, the event organizer, is responsible for upholding this policy at any event, and University staff and venue staff may act in accordance with this policy.

 

Any person attending a City Fiestas event is accountable for their own language and behaviour. If behaviour is reported that is not in accordance with this policy, members may be asked to leave immediately by City Fiestas staff.

 

City Fiestas staff will receive specific training on our Safe Space Policy annually the week commencing the reviewal date of this policy. The Directors have the responsibility to ensure this policy is enacted at their events and if needs be may ask individuals to leave.

 

External speakers and performers at City Fiestas events must be briefed on the Safe Space Policy.

 

3. Complaint procedure and action

 

Complaints received may result in City Fiestas raising the complaint report with the University from which the guest/student originates.

 

The Directors of City Fiestas may immediately act upon a complaint through a number of ways including:

  • Giving the complainant a platform to express their complaint

  • Reiterate to guests in attendance of the Safe Space policy and issue them with a warning that they can be asked to leave an event

  • Ask any guests complained against to leave

  • Work with any security put in place to remove attendees

  • Make the University aware of any complaint or incident that has violated the policy

 

Any complaints after an event should be reported to the Directors of City Fiestas via email or letter.
